Suffering, Endurance Character, Hope

Lenten Devotional Day 10

Scripture Reading: Romans 5:1-5

During our ‘time spent at home’ last year, Steve and I worked on a puzzle together. Even when we could not find another piece to fit, we had the hope of eventually seeing the finished puzzle. And during our years together we have faced struggles – with health, loved ones, disappointments and hardships. And during those times, we endured. We stayed the course in spite of difficulties. On the most difficult days, we proved to ourselves that we have what it takes to make it through.

In Romans, Paul reminds us that our walk with God follows the same pattern. We may not understand what is happening – or why something is happening in our lives, but we should rejoice in suffering. In the end, suffering allows us to continue pushing forward under trying circumstances. Trials shine a light on the true anchor of our soul. Do we trust in God? Or do we murmur, pout and complain? Are we God-focused or self-focused.

With each struggle we endure, we build the fortitude to deal with more hardship. Christians are ‘over-comers’. Our character is tested and we prove – even to ourselves – that we are Christ-centered. We are made complete. “Consider it joy when you experience trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance..so you may be complete.” James 1:2-4

We can rejoice in suffering because the truth never changes. The truth is God loves us and sent His Son to die for our sins. We have the hope of eternal life.

Personal Application Ideas:

Which scriptures help you most when you are suffering? How can you keep those verses in your heart to reference in times of tribulation.

Prayer:

Dear Lord, you know my heart. You know at times I grumble – if not externally at least internally. Help me to remember to rejoice during tribulation knowing that you are working on my character until the puzzle that is ,my life is complete. May I focus on your example of how to handle suffering and may I focus on your word to guide my response. Thank you for trials. Amen
