Jesus On the Go
Day 6 Lenten Devotion
Bible Reading: Matthew 6:14-22
And Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes and the birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head.” Matthew 6:20
For many years (prior to these COVID times) Steve and I both traveled for work, sometimes apart, sometimes together, as many as 40 or 45 weeks a year. Traveling is not always easy with different hotels and many miles. We had accepted it as part of our occupations.
Jesus knew His role here on Earth. He knew he had come to die for our sins. He knew His ministry would require constant travel and would not be easy, never staying in one place for long. And His disciples had to accept this as well. After seeing Jesus perform miracles and hearing Him teach, a zealous scribe was full of emotion and stated he would “follow Jesus anywhere.” Jesus was quick to point out the daily suffering that would be required. The scribe was never mentioned again.
We also must be willing to give up anything that stand in our way of being dedicated to God. Following Jesus is not one emotion-filled moment of saying ‘yes’. It is a way of life, a commitment. As it is written in 1st John, “If anyone loves the world, the love of the father is not in him.” Our priorities and values must be godly. We must realize that this world is not our home. Our home is in heaven with Jesus.
Jesus knows this is not always easy. He knows we are human and we will faulted. But if we accept Him as our Lord and Savior, the Holy Spirit will be with us to guide our actions and remind us to continue to walk in His footsteps.
Prayer
Lord, just as you knew your purpose during your time on Earth, help me to understand my purpose in this world filled with so much attraction to physical gains. Guide my steps and my actions each day so my life is dedicated to you and to bringing others into your fold. Amen
